Description

One of my favorite memories was capturing this image. Whilst out with a film crew, we decided to capture some B-roll footage for a TV show we were filming, and as the sun began its descent into the horizon we managed to locate a pod of 5 hippos. We sat with them, gin and tonics in hand, filming as they dropped below the surface and emerging in new spots every few minutes. The curiosity of the pod was, for want of a better word, cute.

They would stick their heads up, blow water from their noses, roll their ears around to expel the water trapped in them and quick as a flash disappear. They are distant relatives of both whales and dolphins and as such have the ability to hold their breath for up to 5 minutes. Once the night began to blanket the bush, we smiled, gave each other high fives and returned to camp, happy in the knowledge we captured all we wanted and then some more.
