Description

The Dudley Female is one of the Sabi Sands’ most prominent female leopards purely due to her success rate of rearing cubs to adulthood.

While viewing her slowly ambling through the reed bed in the Sand River, she stopped pricked her ears in my direction and quick as a flash she dashed into the reeds, emerging seconds later with her quarry, an adult Nile Monitor lizard which was even more impressive considering she was 17 years old at the time of this photograph and the speed of these reptiles is blistering to say the least.

She was nearing the end of her life at this point, losing muscle mass and constantly being harassed and attacked by younger, stronger female leopards attempting to overthrow her for the prime territory she possessed. She killed the monitor lizard, hobbled into the riverbed in search of shelter to begin eating, stopped for a brief second to lock eyes with me one last time then disappeared, this being the last time I ever had the honour of seeing her alive.
